The release came with a hilarious music video showing Bentley stuck in a never-ending nightmare.

Dierks Bentley has created the perfect rugged heartbreak anthem that’s guaranteed to fuel the rage of any singles feeling especially anti-Valentine’s Day this year. “She Hates Me,” which effortlessly blends the country star’s signature humor with a bold, edgier sound, is out now.

Tapping into the same energy as his 2014 No. 1 hit, “Drunk On A Plane,” the just-released tune tells the story of a man who’s been dumped by the girl he was planning his life with. Although heartache is at the center of the narrative, Bentley portrays it in a lighthearted manner with the accompaniment of hard-hitting electric guitar plucks and head-banging beats, creating an overall grungy vibe.

The character at hand is insistent that he and this mystery girl are meant to be together, however he’s quickly faced with the reality that his southern charm is not doing the trick this time.

“She hates me / My hair, my truck, my dog, my music makes her crazy/ She done been there, done that/ Ain’t comin’ back, no maybes/ Thought one day we’d be on some acres raising babies/ She should be fallin’/ Only problem is she hates me,” the Capitol Records Nashville artist delivers on the chorus.

“She Hates Me” was penned last Spring during a writing camp with Bentley and longtime collaborators Ashley Gorley, Ross Copperman and Chase McGill. Initially, it came about as a way to lighten the mood among the songwriters, however it ended up resonating so well with Bentley’s family and friends that he had no choice but to officially share it with his fans too.

“We were goofing around with this idea before diving into our next ‘serious’ song, really just trying to make each other laugh. It just fell out, and I didn’t think much more about it after that,” Bentley explains. “But then it really came to life in the studio, and then my kids were requesting it and then I was getting texts from friends who had heard it, so I started taking it more seriously! I love any opportunity to laugh at myself–especially my younger self, and ‘She Hates Me’ definitely provides that. I can’t wait for my fans to see the music video!”

Also included in the songwriting credits is Wesley Scantlin and Jimmy Allen, who were the writers of another song of the same name that was recorded by the band Puddle of Mudd back in 2001. While Bentley’s version is more of a play on the original recording than an exact rendition, the two songs still bear a close resemblance in both the storyline and the grungy instrumentals.

As the Arizona native mentions above, the single drop has been paired with the music video that captures all the dark twists and turns that Bentley faces while trapped in a never-ending nightmare. He finds himself surrounded by dark memories of his ex-girlfriend who took out her anger by trashing his house and car, making sure he gets the message. However, even when he tries to find some escape in a bar, she still manages to show up and inflict pain on him to the point where he rides off in an ambulance.

With his new dark and steamy tune in tow, Dierks Bentley will make his to way to the U.K. from March 14-16 to headline the annual C2C: Country to Country Festival.
