First premiering in 2002, American Idol gave rise to some once-in-a-lifetime talent in Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Just 21 when she belted Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” Underwood went on to dominate the show’s fourth season before she was crowned the winner in 2005. Twenty years and countless awards later, the “Cowboy Casanova” songstress is right back where she started.
Taking Katy Perry’s place, Underwood offers a fresh perspective as the show’s first-ever alum to sit on the judging panel. And while she may still struggle with the word “no,” the 23-time CMT Award winner had no trouble voicing her opinion on one particular audition.
Filo Ebid Stuns Carrie Underwood on ‘American Idol’
As 2024 ticked away, Filo Ebid was ending on a high note. Carrie Underwood and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest surprised the 23-year-old by upgrading his golden ticket to platinum during ABC’s live New Year’s Eve celebration. This distinction allows Filo to skip the first round of Hollywood Week.
While his audition doesn’t air until tonight’s episode (Sunday, March 16), viewers have already received their first look at Filo. Idol shared an early glimpse of the Egyptian-born artist from Dublin, California, belting Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness.” And it’s magnificent.
“You Don’t Need To Be No Doctor”
Auditioning before American Idol judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, Filo Ebid had the full backing of his mother, Haidi. But Mom has a backup plan if singing doesn’t pan out. In fact, even if Filo walks away with the prize money and recording contract, his mom still wants him to attend medical school.
Following his audition, however, Underwood made it clear to Filo that she and Haidi are at odds when it comes to his future career path.
“You don’t need to be no doctor,” scoffed the “Jesus, Take the Wheel” singer, 41. “Tell Momma she was wrong.”
Amid her fellow judges’ laughter, Underwood quickly added, “No, don’t say that. She’s just looking out for you.”
Tune in to American Idol at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC to see Filo’s full audition.
