Now, the country music legend has opened up about the emotional memories he shared with his late son-in-law and how Ben’s passing affected him.

A Song with a Special Meaning

Alan Jackson recently released his album Where Have You Gone, which features a deeply personal song titled You’ll Always Be My Baby. In a recent interview, Jackson revealed that he originally wrote the song for his daughter Maddie’s wedding at her request.

“When Maddie got married, she wanted me to write a song for the father-daughter dance,” Jackson shared. “So that’s where it came from, and I wrote it. Then I told my other two girls, ‘Look, I’m writing one song for all three of y’all. You can use it for your weddings if you want to. I don’t want to write three different songs.’”

The song quickly became special to all three of his daughters, but the most touching reaction came from Maddie’s husband, Ben. Jackson vividly remembers the moment he played the song for Ben, a memory that now holds even greater meaning in the wake of his passing.

A Moment That Stands Out

Jackson recalled a moment at home when he first shared You’ll Always Be My Baby with Ben.

“I remember we were at home, and I had a rough demo of it or something,” he said. “We went out to the garage and sat in the truck because I didn’t have a way to play it in the house. I don’t remember what I had—maybe a CD or something.”

Alan Jackson’s Emotional Story About Late Son In Law

As the song played, Ben was deeply moved. Jackson described how his son-in-law became emotional, telling him the song was “just perfect.” That reaction has stayed with Jackson, especially after losing Ben so suddenly.

“I remember him looking emotional about it and saying, ‘That was just perfect,’ or something to that effect. And that stuck with me,” Jackson said. “And then, of course, Maddie’s husband passed away accidentally before they even reached their first wedding anniversary. So that was a nice memory to have of that moment.”

A Painful Loss and a Time of Healing

After Ben’s passing, Alan Jackson found it difficult to return to music. He had been set to release an album at the time but decided to put the project on hold. In an interview with HITS Daily Double, Jackson admitted that he struggled emotionally and even felt angry at the world.

“When he died, I was kind of pissed off at the world,” Jackson shared. “I just wasn’t feeling right about anything.”

For Jackson, losing Ben wasn’t just about losing a son-in-law—it was about losing something he had never had before.

“You know how I was raised—I grew up with four older sisters. Then Denise and I had three girls. It’s all I was ever around—girls and women. So having a son-in-law was like having a boy I could fish with, work on cars with, and do things I never had the chance to do with a son,” Jackson explained. “It was tough losing him so suddenly, so jarring to all of us. I lost something I’d never had before.”

A Lasting Tribute

The pain of Ben’s loss still lingers, but Jackson and his family have found ways to keep his memory alive. You’ll Always Be My Baby remains a treasured piece of music for the Jackson family, serving as a lasting tribute to the love and loss they have experienced.
