The NBA has postponed the Charlotte Hornets vs. Los Angeles Lakers game, scheduled to be played at Crypto.com Arena, due to the devastating wildfires that have hit the region.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick’s home was among those reportedly destroyed. The contest will be rescheduled and played at a later date.
In response to the deadly Palisades Fire – set to be the costliest ever – the NBA stated: “The entire NBA family sends its thoughts and support to the community of Los Angeles during this challenging time.
“We are grateful for the thousands of local firefighters and first responders who have demonstrated enormous bravery. Our prayers remain with those affected by the unimaginable devastation caused by the wildfires.”
The Lakers organization also released a statement: “We’re heartbroken for Los Angeles.

“Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this unimaginable tragedy. And our gratitude is with the first responders and all of you who come together when we need each other the most.”
“Tonight’s game will be rescheduled to focus on what matters most today. We’re with you, LA.”
The wildfire has burned more than 17,000 acres and over 1,000 structures. Redick informed the press on Tuesday that he and his family were forced to evacuate due to their home being in the danger zone of the Palisades Fire.
“I just want to acknowledge and send thoughts and prayers to everyone in the Palisades right now,” he said. “That’s where I live.”
He continued, “Our family, my wife’s family, my wife’s twin sister, they’ve evacuated. I know a lot of people are freaking out right now, including my family. From the sound of things, with the winds coming [Tuesday night], I know a lot of people are scared. So I just want to acknowledge that. Thoughts and prayers for sure, and hope everybody stays safe.”
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is also dealing with the impact of the Palisades Fire, although he does not reside there himself. His mother Ann, who is 90 years old, was living in the area and lost her home to the fire.
Ann Kerr reported to the San Francisco Chronicle via a group text message that she was okay after the incident, which was confirmed by the publication as a response to those checking on her well-being.
In the time before the destruction of his childhood home, Steve Kerr expressed his concern for those affected by the fires. “I want to send my thoughts and condolences to everybody in Los Angeles dealing with the fires,” Kerr stated following the Warriors’ defeat to the Miami Heat. “My mom lives in Pacific Palisades. She had to evacuate.”
“Everything I’m seeing and reading is just terrifying what’s happening down there. So just want to send thoughts to everyone who’s going through the devastation of the fire. Obviously the game is secondary to that and to many things in life. Perspective is important.”
Many lives have been ruined by the fires, at least 5 have been killed and about 180,000 displaced from their homes.
