July 30, 1989, is a day that rodeo fans will never forget. It was that day in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where world champion bull rider Lane Frost rode took his last ride.

Lane Frost was just 25-years-old when he took his place atop the bull named Takin’ Care of Business at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. After finishing an 8-second ride, Frost dismounted the bull, but the animal charged the rider and hit Lane’s back with his horn, breaking several ribs. The blow caused internal injuries that led to Frost’s death almost immediately.

Those who knew Lane Frost loved him and remembered his ear-to-ear smile and contagious happiness. Those who didn’t know him personally fell in love with him through 8 Seconds, the 1994 Hollywood movie about his life that starred Luke Perry as Frost.

At the time of his death, Frost had been married to Kellie Kyle for four years. 8 Seconds shared details of their love story and their challenges as a couple. While Kellie was thrown into the spotlight at the release of the movie about her late husband, she didn’t remain in the spotlight.

What happened to Kellie after Lane’s death?

Kellie remarried in 1993, less than a year before 8 Seconds was released. Her new husband, Mike Macy, is a two-time National Finals Rodeo team roping competitor who supported his wife through the emotional task of reliving her and Lane’s story.

In a newly released interview clip from 1994, Kellie appears alongside her late husband’s best friend and fellow bull rider Tuff Hedeman. Kellie, who was pregnant with her first child at the time of the interview, was asked what it was like to revisit her time with Lane through the movie even though she had “gone on with her life.”

“It doesn’t really seem like I’ve gone on yet. This is kind of a closing chapter after the premiere and after the movie’s coming out, for me,” Kellie Macy said. “My husband’s been wonderful support through the whole thing…It’s been hard, but to sit there and watch it brings great joy….But, we chose to do it, and I think it was a great tribute to Lane. That’s the most important thing for me.”

After Lane’s death, Kellie relied on her faith to pull her through the grieving process. She and her husband, Mike, now live on a massive ranch near Lubbock, Texas, that has been in Mike Macy’s family for more than a century.

“God has a totally different plan that never totally turns out the way we think that it’s going to,” Macy said. “But it’s totally amazing. It’s 100 times greater than you could ever imagine.”

Kellie and Mike share two children, a son named Aaron and a daughter named Brogan, who were both prize-winning youth rodeo competitors. Both Aaron and Brogan are married and Brogan is the mother of two young children.
