Nick Kyrgios has responded to Jack Draper after the British No. 1 stood up for Jannik Sinner.
The Italian accepted a three-month suspension as part of a case resolution agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for the prohibited substance clostebol.
WADA accepted that Sinner was not aware of his exposure to the substance and did not gain any performance-enhancing benefits, but said Sinner bore responsibility for “negligence of members of his entourage” which resulted in his exposure to clostebol.
Sinner’s suspension will last from February 9 to May 4. After news of his ban broke, Draper came out in defence of the world No. 1.
The Brit has a good relationship with the three-time Major winner, and said it wasn’t good for tennis to see the top-ranked player banned.
“I know Jannik, he’s a good friend and I know that with this whole thing, I am sure he wouldn’t have done anything intentionally. But obviously, that’s the sport and we have to be accountable for what’s going in our bodies,” Draper told Sky Sports.
“He is obviously banned now for a few months. I don’t think that’s good for tennis. I don’t think it’s good for sport that the No. 1 player in the world and someone who is doing incredible things is having a ban but you know he will be back shortly and I wish him all the best. I hope he is going to be okay.”
But Kyrgios disagrees with Draper. The Australian has been outspoken throughout Sinner’s case and called for him to be banned back in August.

After reading Draper’s comments, the former Wimbledon finalist retorted: “Then don’t have steroids in your system?”
When Sinner’s three-month suspension was announced on Saturday, Kyrgios suggested it was unfair and claimed other players had been airing their grievances to him privately. “Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist,” he tweeted.
“So you were innocent and we were getting fed that you were innocent but now you are suspended from playing the sport? Make it make sense. I’ve got multiple players in my DM’s on how putrid this is even Grand slam champions. Cooked.”
Sinner’s doping saga started last March, when he twice tested positive for clostebol. He successfully appealed both of his provisional suspensions, meaning he was allowed to continue competing until a final ruling was made in his case.
The world No. 1 argued that the substance unknowingly entered his system via his then-physiotherapist, who had been using a spray containing clostebol to treat a cut on his finger and did not inform Sinner. He continued to massage Sinner without wearing gloves.
In August, following an independent tribunal hearing, the International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed they accepted his explanation. The tribunal ruled that Sinner “bore no fault or negiligence” for his anti-doping violations.
The Italian’s ranking points and prize money from Indian Wells were docked in accordance with the code, as this was the tournament Sinner was competing in when he returned the positive tests.
However, WADA launched an appeal on the basis that Sinner bore some responsibility for any negligence from his team members. The Court of Arbitration for Sport was set to hear the case in April but WADA has now settled a case resolution agreement with Sinner.
The 23-year-old will be able to resume official training activity from April 13 before his ban ends on May 4. The four days he served in provisional suspensions were credited on his three-month ban. Sinner will be back in time for the Masters 1000 in Rome and the French Open.
