At first, it sounded like the tragic end to a dream vacation: In October 2016, Bianca Rudolph, an avid hunter and the wife of prominent Pittsburgh-area dentist Larry Rudolph, died from a shotgun wound while packing up at a remote safari camp in Zambia. Her husband, Larry, told police it was a terrible accident—a misfire as Bianca tried to put away her gun.
But as the years ticked by, what seemed like a heartbreaking mishap began to unravel into one of the most chilling true crime sagas in recent memory. Now, the shocking twists and turns of the Rudolph case are the subject of Hulu’s gripping new three-part docuseries, Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari, premiering July 21.
A Safari, a Shotgun, and a Shattered Story
The morning of October 11, 2016, was supposed to mark the end of a once-in-a-lifetime hunting adventure for the Rudolphs. Instead, it became the beginning of a years-long investigation that would cross continents and expose secrets buried beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect marriage.
According to Larry Rudolph’s account, he was in the shower when he heard the blast. He found Bianca, his wife of 34 years, bleeding from a chest wound on their bedroom floor. Larry told Zambian police he believed the shotgun had been left loaded after a hunt the previous day, and that Bianca must have accidentally fired it while packing the weapon into its case.
Local authorities initially ruled Bianca’s death an accident. But back in the United States, friends and colleagues began to raise questions. Why had Larry rushed to cremate Bianca’s body in Zambia, against the wishes of her family and the advice of the U.S. Embassy? Why did he seem so eager to collect on multiple life insurance policies?
Red Flags and Secret Affairs
Federal investigators soon discovered that Larry Rudolph’s version of events didn’t quite add up. According to court records, forensic experts determined that Bianca’s wound was likely inflicted from a distance of 6.5 to 8 feet—making it improbable she had shot herself by accident.
Then came the bombshell: Larry Rudolph was having a long-term affair with Lori Milliron, a former dental hygienist in his practice. The two had been romantically involved for years, and Milliron was reportedly pressuring Larry to leave his wife.
Investigators also uncovered a financial motive. Larry had filed claims on nine different life insurance policies in the wake of Bianca’s death, totaling nearly $5 million. Prosecutors alleged that he killed Bianca not only to be with Milliron, but to cash in on the policies.
The Trial That Gripped Two Continents
In 2022, after a painstaking investigation involving the FBI, Zambian officials, and a host of forensic experts, Larry Rudolph was arrested and charged with foreign murder and mail fraud. The trial, held in Denver, Colorado, became a media sensation.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Larry had confessed to the shooting during a dinner with Milliron, after learning that the FBI was looking into Bianca’s death. Witnesses included Larry’s former business partner, the couple’s insurance broker, FBI agents, and even members of Safari Club International who had hunted with the Rudolphs.
Larry took the stand in his own defense, insisting, “I did not kill my wife. I could not murder my wife. I would not murder my wife.” But the jury was unconvinced. In August 2022, Larry Rudolph was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
Milliron was also convicted for perjury, obstruction of justice, and being an accessory after the fact. In June 2023, she was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison.
A Docuseries Peels Back the Layers
Now, Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari brings this extraordinary case to the screen, produced by XTR in association with Rolling Stone Films and ABC News Studios. Directed by Dani Sloane and based on Matt Sullivan’s Rolling Stone article “Before the Dentist Knows You’re Dead,” the series features exclusive interviews with Larry Rudolph and Lori Milliron from federal prison, as well as never-before-heard perspectives from those closest to the case.
The docuseries also includes interviews with Larry’s former business partner, Milliron’s daughter, the Rudolphs’ insurance broker, FBI agents, and even the former U.S. ambassador to Zambia. As the ABC synopsis puts it, the show “paints a disturbing picture of the man at the center of this shocking case.”
A Marriage, a Mystery, and a Media Frenzy
For more than three decades, Larry and Bianca Rudolph appeared to be the model of a successful couple—wealthy, well-traveled, and passionate about big-game hunting. But behind the scenes, their marriage was crumbling, and secrets were mounting.
Bianca’s friends and family never believed her death was an accident. Her children and close confidantes pushed for answers, refusing to let her memory be reduced to a footnote in a police report. Their determination helped keep the investigation alive, ultimately leading to Larry’s conviction.
Why This Story Resonates
The Rudolph case has captivated the public not just because of its sensational details—a safari, a secret lover, millions in insurance money—but because it exposes the dark underbelly of trust, betrayal, and greed. It’s a reminder that even the most outwardly perfect lives can hide unimaginable truths.
Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari doesn’t just recount the facts; it explores the emotional fallout for everyone involved, from Bianca’s grieving family to the investigators who refused to let the case go cold.
A Legacy of Justice
Today, Larry Rudolph sits in a federal prison, serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife. Lori Milliron is also behind bars. For Bianca’s loved ones, justice has finally been served, though the pain of her loss remains.
As viewers tune in to Hulu’s docuseries, they’ll be confronted with a story that is as haunting as it is unforgettable—a tale of love gone wrong, and a relentless pursuit of the truth.
