JoJo Siwa Shares Her Honest Reaction to Miley Cyrus’ Playful Onstage Joke About “Bringing Her Back Out of the Closet,” Admitting She Was Unsure How to Feel About the Comment and Opening Up About Her Thoughts on Coming Out and LGBTQ+ Representation in the Entertainment Industry

Cyrus made the joke in a video shown at WorldPride in Washington, D.C. over the weekend after Siwa recently confirmed her relationship with Chris Hughes

JoJo Siwa is sharing her thoughts on Miley Cyrus’ recent joke about her sexuality.

After Cyrus, 32, joked about bringing Siwa, 22, “back out” of the closet (seeming to reference her relationship with boyfriend Chris Hughes) in a video shown at WorldPride in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, the “Karma” singer shared her thoughts in an Instagram post on Thursday, June 12.

Siwa publicly identified as a lesbian before growing close with Hughes on the latest season of Celebrity Big Brother UK and subsequently confirming their romantic relationship earlier this month. Prior to entering the reality show, she was dating ex-partner Kath Ebbs, who identifies as non-binary.

In a scene from Cyrus’ viral WorldPride video, the “Flowers” musician filmed herself inside a closet and joked, “I’m going back inside to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”

Following online conversation about the comment, Siwa took to Instagram and shared a series of photos of herself posing with Cyrus memorabilia as a child as well as a photo with the Hannah Montana alum.

“I was happy at my 5th birthday having a Miley themed party, and I’m still happy now at 22…,” she opened the post’s caption. “If you know me, you know that miley is my day 1, grew up beyond inspired by her from 2 years old on…”

Siwa continued, “I wasn’t sure how I felt about things for a couple of days… but I’ve started to come to some thoughts…. I don’t believe what Miley said at world pride was ill intended, honestly I think it was meant to be a joke, but just not very good one haha. Not what the world, or myself needs to hear anyday of the week.”

She’s since spoken with Cyrus briefly about the moment. “I messaged miley light heartedly about it and she replied and said ‘All love. Always,’” wrote the Dance Moms alum.

Continuing the caption, Siwa spoke about how sexuality can develop over time. “Honestly the most beautiful thing I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that love is a gorgeous rainbow. Don’t question yourself, don’t second guess yourself, just love. Love love love love love,” she explained.

The “Guilty Pleasure” artist concluded, “People judge no matter what, and it can be very hard, especially when it comes from someone you love, and look up to… but if you feel happy and content with yourself, that’s most important. You get one life… hold onto it, make it yours, find your happy, and love.”
